Danny was born in Wilmslow on 14th November 1980 and came through the ranks at Manchester United's Academy.

In 2001, Whitaker signed his first professional contract with Macclesfield and made a fantastic impression on his debut on 2nd February 2002 scoring against Exeter City.

Danny really broke on to the scene during the 2002-03 season and consistently good performances attracted several higher-league clubs.

He won the Player of the Year award in the 2005/06 season but would make the short journey over to Port Vale shortly after.

He was an ever-present for Vale in his two years there but after their relegation in 2008, Whitaker joined Oldham Athletic and continued to ply his trade in League One.

After two seasons at Boundary Park he moved to League Two side Chesterfield in the summer of 2010 and during the following season he did not miss one league match as The Spireites were crowned League Two Champions, and Whitaker also featured in the PFA League Two Team of the Year.

John Askey then brought Danny back to the Moss Rose in the summer of 2013 and since then he has been virtually an ever-present back at the Moss Rose.

Danny signed up for his tenth professional season with Macc in the summer of 2017 and he played a pivotal role in the midfield as The Silkmen were crowned National League champions. He also picked up Macclesfield’s Player of the Year award as well as being named in the National League’s Team of the season.

In the summer of 2018 it was announced Whitaker would take up a Player/Coaching role and has stepped in to manage The Silkmen on a temporary basis alongside Neil Howarth.
