Macclesfield loanee Adam Yates says he was impressed with the quality of the squad following the opening day victory over Wrexham on Saturday.
Yates joined up with the squad with little to no time left before the season started, and slotted in at right-back comfortably.
The fullback joined the Silkmen on a month’s loan after it was confirmed Jared Hodgkiss will miss some time due to a groin injury suffered in training.
Speaking post Wrexham, Yates said: “I’ve been promoted from this league before when I was with Morecombe and I’ve been promoted with Port Vale but I have to say the grit these lads showed today in front of a big crowd is admirable.
“There were some young players on that pitch for Macclesfield and every single player put a shift in. It was a thoroughly deserved three points.”
Yates’ Macc debut marked the first time he played amongst the rest of the defence, and he says the experience of the back four helped the boys keep the all-important clean sheet.
He said: “Three out of the back four have played a lot of league football, but I feel like we’re all good communicators and that bodes well. We tried not to drop deep, dealt with a lot of balls coming into the box, and we limited them to only two or three chances.
“It’s admirable to come to a club like this – with an intimidating atmosphere for some players – and still grind out the result like we did.
“I have to say I’m pleased with the way things have gone, not just for myself but for a lot of the young lads. We want to get as many points on the board as possible. I was a surprised by how much football was played today, but we played in the right areas and that was the key to winning the game.”
