Macclesfield Town are pleased to confirm that Neil Howarth and Danny Whitaker will join new boss Mark Yates’ backroom team as joint assistant managers.
The duo, who together have amassed over 650 appearances in Macclesfield colours, will play key roles in our return to the EFL with Whitaker continuing his playing role.
Howarth is of course no stranger to working with Yates after spells together at Kidderminster and Cheltenham.
Speaking to mtfc.co.uk after his backroom staff were confirmed, Yates said: “I’m so pleased to have Neil and Danny on board for the new season.
“As a manager it is really important to have the right people around you and in Neil and Danny I’ll certainly have that.
“Both of them have been terrific servants to this Football Club over the years and they will be a big help to me in my new role.
“Obviously I’ve worked with Neil before but to have Danny on board too is fantastic for the Football Club. He’ll be a big asset for us both on and off the pitch.”
Club Chairman Mark Blower added: “I’m delighted to now have the management team in place and we can now focus on building the playing squad for the new season.”
You can see profiles of our new backroom team below and both Whitaker and Howarth will join Yates in speaking to the media tomorrow. For more information or accreditation for tomorrow’s press conference please email [email protected].
Joint Assistant Manager- Neil Howarth
A stalwart of the Macclesfield defence during the mid to late 1990’s, Neil captained the side that won the FA Trophy in 1996 and secured the Conference title in both 1995 and 1997. He also led the team that achieved promotion to the third tier of English Football for the first time in our history in 1998.
In total Neil made over 250 appearances for the Silkmen before having spells with Cheltenham and Kidderminster.
Neil would go on to become assistant to Mark Yates at Kidderminster and Cheltenham and has enjoyed spells in the backroom teams at both Portsmouth and Bury.
Recently, Neil has been heading up the recruitment at Salford City but will now link up Yates again and return to the Football Club where he is held in the highest regard.
Joint Assistant Manager - Danny Whitaker
After signing from local football, Danny impressed in the youth team and reserves before making his debut against Exeter City in February 2002 - scoring with almost his first touch. Leaving the club in 2006, he joined Port Vale in League One and spent two seasons at Vale Park, playing just shy of 100 games in all competitions over two seasons.
From there he joined Oldham Athletic before signing for Chesterfield in 2010 where he spent three seasons.
In 2013 he re-joined Macc and has been a regular in the squad ever since. Danny has now moved past 400 games for the Club and played a key role in our return to the EFL last season.
Danny will now continue his playing career whilst taking up this new role in the managerial team.
