Whitehead Targeting Promotion

Macclesfield Town midfielder Danny Whitehead says the club must be targeting promotion after a fantastic first half of the season.

Macclesfield currently sit top of the National League after 24 games, two points clear of second placed Sutton United – who they face on December 30.

Discussing the brilliant start to the season, Whitehead said: “We have to be looking for promotion for sure.

“If we can go up winners then that would be the perfect scenario for us, but if that isn’t possible the play offs are a must. I really think we can achieve something with the group of players we have this season.

“There are some really big teams up there like Wrexham and Dagenham and Redbridge, but anything can happen in this league and with it being so tight at the top it is still anyone’s title for the taking.”

Though the squad have let their feet do the talking so far this season, Whitehead has thanked the fans for being the voice behind them, encouraging them to keep pushing.

“The fans have been brilliant so far,” he said. “If we can encourage them to keep getting behind us for the remainder of the season they could be vital in helping us achieve promotion.”

Danny returned to the club in the summer after spending some time with Wigan, and he says he is really enjoying being back at the club.

He added: “I have really enjoyed my time back here again. Playing week in week out has made it perfect, especially after my previous spells at the club. It is great to be back!”
