Ahead of this weekend’s pre-season fixture with Stockport County, assistant manager Steve Watson believes that this game will be a good opportunity to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the new look squad.
Watson, speaking exclusively to Silkmen TV, also revealed that the next couple of weeks could be an exciting time for the club In the transfer market - having secured the signatures of Kieran Kennedy and Noe Baba.
“The Stockport game is probably going to be a bit more of a reality in terms of ourselves and what we may come up against,” he said. “The other two games were against higher league opposition and they were very tough, but this is the real test for us.
“Obviously there will be a few trialists involved, but ultimately it is about working out what our best 11 Is for the start of the season and, especially in terms of the players signed, we need to figure out what partnerships might work best. The lads likely to start the season will mostly be on show.
“At the start of the summer there was a bit of negativity because of the players we’ve lost, but I’m sure the supporters and the people around are extremely positive about the lads that have come in to replace them.
“We’re now not a million miles away from having a squad that is ready to start the season. There is a couple that we would like to nail down, and then hopefully we’ll be starting the season with a decent number of lads and we’ll be ready to go.
“We will continue to look at players who may come on trial. That may be a good market for us as the pre-season progresses."
