Despite the frustration of our 2-1 loss on Tuesday evening thanks to late goals from Sutton United, several players made their first full appearances for the club, and their performances reinforced the squad depth we have this season. Steve Watson discussed the positives we can take from the game beginning with our goal from Scott Wilson.
He said: “It was his first touch of the game, doing what a lone striker has to do – gamble and he took it so early the goalkeeper couldn’t do anything about it. Sometimes you can say we scored too early! But we played when we could and we defended a hell of a lot of balls in the box we won’t play against that too often.”
The next to be praised were the players making their debuts including goalkeeper Billy O’Brien, making his first full appearance after replacing Shwan Jalal due to injury in our game against Bromley.
“There were a lot of plus points for us tonight, we have to take as many positives as we can, one of them was obviously the goalkeeper, Noe Baba has proved he can slot in at right back and do a good job, he’s competitive he’s a very fit lad.
“There were first starts for Courtney (Richards) and Mitchell (Hancox). I thought Gime Toure was a handful. Although his fitness looked great tonight we haven’t had him long and we need to try and drill him in the way that we want him to play, when to pull off and when to go towards the ball. But as a natural talent I think you can see he has got a hell of a lot to offer.”
