Josh Thompson has vowed to prove his worth to manager John Askey after joining the club on Friday.

Thompson played for Merseyside-based Southport last season, but opted to leave the club after they were relegated from the National League.

“The gaffer brought me in because I was a player that he’s seen and was interested in,” said Thompson, “the rest is up to me.

“If I can prove to him that I can play the way he wants me to play, then it’s going to be a good relationship for everyone. I can’t wait to get started now.”

Stockport County youth graduate Thompson, 26, boasts a wealth of footballing experience on his CV – having represented 6 English Football League sides.

He also enjoyed a spell as a Celtic player early in his career – where he made 18 appearances and scoring three goals in the process.

Whilst revealing that the move has been on the cards for some time, Thompson admitted that he is now looking forward to the season ahead.

“I’ve been speaking to the manager and Mark (Blower) throughout the summer. It gets to the beginning of July/late June and things begin to get done.

“You go away on your holidays and you begin to look forward to the season ahead, so to get the move done is great for me.

“Thankfully that’s all sorted now and I’m just looking forward to playing football.”
