As the summer break draws to a close with the transfer window still open, pre-season has arrived. Today marked the first day back for the new players and those returning to the Moss Rose Stadium, and coach Steve Watson spoke to The SIlkmen Youtube channel to give us an insight into what happens behind the scenes.
He said “It’s been a long time coming, it’s been an eventful summer for us, we’ve done an awful lot of work behind the scenes we’ve looked at a hell of a lot of players. It’s all come together now and we're ready to get going.”
But what would the players be up to in their first session back?
“Your first day is just your normal day, you get to meet everybody really, it's about getting everybody acquainted and getting the kit sorted – then we go into the local park and do a few hill inclines.”
“Today’s probably going to be a little more old school than the rest of the week. The rest of the week nowadays you get the balls out straight away and you get your fitness through football. Football fitness is different to running on a treadmill so get them straight into football with the odd run thrown in.”
Pre-season is often famed for its gruelling fitness sessions but Steve discussed the change in attitude to pre-season over the years…
He said: “Dare I say it back in mine and John’s day it was very different, you finished the season and just have a ten week break completely, go on holiday, do what you want and start again.”
“Nowadays, the players don’t tend to do that they look after themselves better, there’s not that drinking culture like there used to be. You don’t need to do as much intense work when you come back you can get straight back into football and get fit that way.”
