As part of the Northern Premier League’s fiftieth anniversary celebrations, they recently set about the task of naming their all time top hundred players.
After a poll which attracted literally thousands of votes, Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy was named as the NPL’s greatest ever player – yet ten players who were honoured have strong Silkmen associations.
Former defender Andrew Teague claimed a magnificent fourth place, whilst current midfielder Elliott Durrell was named 12th.
Striker Chris Camden was named 34th, whilst popular ‘keeper Alan Zelem broke into the top fifty players as he was named 47th.
Legendary striker Steve Burr finished in 53rd place, whilst midfielders Karl Marginson and Colin Little claimed 62nd and 69th place respectively.
The much loved “Showman” Brian Fidler was named in 75th position whilst John Coleman (98th) and Phil Staley (99th) completed the Silkmen connections.
Macclesfield Town would like to congratulate all of the above for the recognition they have deservedly received.
We will be featuring all ten players in much more detail within the pre-season programme - so make sure that you take a walk down Memory Lane with us as we salute our NPL Silkmen stars!
