Spawned in 1908, Hartlepool are one of the oldest teams in the National League this year, at 109 years old. They play their football at Victoria Park on Clarence Road. Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling is a huge fan of the club, following their endeavours on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.
Hartlepool were one of the founding members of the Third Division North in the early 1920s. Brian Clough began his managerial career with the club in 1965.
Despite many mediocre years prior to the 90s and the rebranding of England’s football divisions, Hartlepool were never demoted from the Football League. In 2003, the club won promotion to League One, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Championship only two years later following play-off heartbreak.
In 2006, Hartlepool were relegated and returned to League Two, before bouncing straight back the following season. They were relegated in 2013 once again, finishing only ahead of Portsmouth who had been deducted ten points after they entered administration.
Despite numerous attempted overhauls, financial problems dictated the path of the club, and last season they were relegated to the National League for the first time in their history.
Hartlepool finished 23rd in League Two last season, being relegated after finishing two points behind Newport County. They picked up an average of a point a game all season, winning 11, drawing 13, and losing 22 of their 46 games. They scored 54 and conceded 75. Relegation was sealed on the final day of the season, as Newport County won their last game of the season in the final minute to render Hartlepool’s 2-1 victory over promoted Doncaster Rovers.
