Macclesfield Town will go into tomorrow’s game against Chester sitting six points clear at the top of the National League with promotion a serious possibility at Moss Rose.
Good Friday’s last-gasp win over Woking further increased the momentum, and the game against Chester will be the first of six cup finals for John Askey’s men.
However, the last time they were in the same position was the 97/98 season, when Askey was still a player at Moss Rose. They were also under the management of Sammy McIlroy at the time.
During the Northern-Irishman’s seven years at the helm, The Silkmen would be denied promotion to the Football League, lifted the FA Trophy at Wembley and achieve back-to-back promotions to England’s third tier.
Now, with Macclesfield in a position to create similar memories of 20-years ago, McIlroy continues to be a keen follower of the fortunes of his former club.
In tomorrow’s matchday programme, you can find an exclusive interview with the club legend on his time at the club, the support of the fans, and why he believes his former player is the man to bring success back to Moss Rose!
So pick up your copy of The Silkmen tomorrow, priced at £3, to find out what he has to say!
