Macclesfield suffered defeat on the road to Gateshead as Fraser Kerr, Jordan Burrow and Jordan Preston bagged for the hosts.
Macclesfield, who recalled the likes of Danny Whitaker and Adam Yates had some good spells in the north east but eventually suffered their second defeat of the season.
Despite starting with a good intensity things quickly went downhill for Macclesfield. Preston started the move for Gateshead before Kerr put the ball in the net at the far post, with the referee consulting his linesman before overturning his assistant’s offside decision to award Gateshead the goal.
Play slowed as Macclesfield looked to settle into the game following a turbulent start. The Silkmen played with much of the ball, with Gateshead playing like the away side and looking to build on the counter.
Scott Burgess provided a bit of creativity as he forced a good chance from range at the midpoint of the first half. His driven effort from range forced a corner, which eventually came to nothing.
Toure then engineered the best chance of the half with a mazy run down the left, before firing into the box only to see the ball ricochet around prior to Montgomery collecting with open arms.
A disappointing half was compounded with only seconds remaining, as Burrow claimed the hosts’ second with a header from a corner.
The beginning of the second half was unfortunately no brighter, as Burrow had the chance to double his tally. After a mishap from O’Brien, Fitzpatrick did well to force the angle for the opposition forward, who’s shot only found the side netting.
Macc continued to preserve in search of a route back into the game, and played some good football as the half ticked on.
Danny Whitaker shone in the packed midfield, working hard to create opportunities as Gateshead sat back on their lead.
The 70th minute dealt another blow to the Silkmen however, as Preston bagged a third for the home side.
Running through one-on-one with Macclesfield keeper O’Brien, the Gateshead forward found the net with cool composure and sealed the points for his team.
Macclesfield pressed late on but the third goal was enough for Gateshead as the Silkmen suffered their second defeat of the campaign.
