Macclesfield Town face their penultimate pre-season game this evening as Cheshire neighbours Crewe Alexandra pay us a visit.
Let’s take a look at the game in a bit more detail.
John Askey gave 20 players a run-out in the 5-2 defeat at Stockport County on Saturday as he looked to build up fitness in his squad. The Silkmen boss has hinted that he might give players a little longer on the pitch this evening but a number of trialists could feature once again.
Crewe will be without Jordan Bowery and James Jones for the game but Chris Porter could feature after withdrawing from the side that faced Bury on Saturday after feeling an injury in the warm up.
Last Time Out
The two sides last met in the Cheshire Senior Cup during the 2014/15 season when goals from Waide Fairhurst and Danny Rowe gave John Askey’s side a 2-1 win.
Previously the sides had met in a pre-season friendly in July 2014 when a 7th minute Fairhurst strike also gave Macclesfield a win at the Moss Rose.
The last league meeting between the sides was in the 2011/12 season when a late Colin Daniel goal earned the Silkmen a point in a 2-2 draw. Lewis Chalmers scored from the penalty to give Macc the lead before Nick Powell scored twice to put Crewe ahead only for Daniel to snatch a late point.
One To Watch – George Cooper
Having almost been accelerated into the first team at Crewe, Cooper made his full professional debut in an away fixture against Bradford City at just 17 years of age. He would go on to score his first goal for the club just a week later with a sublime free-kick against Coventry City at the Alexandra Stadium. Renowned for his versatility, Cooper has played in every attacking position for the Railwaymen in his short professional career and has been tipped by many sources as the next best thing to graduate from Crewe’s famous academy.
