Macclesfield Town and Boreham Wood played out an entertaining but goalless draw at the Moss Rose this afternoon as the Silkmen stayed one point off top spot in the Vanarama National League.
Both sides had chances, but couldn't find the break through with Danny Whitehead, Ryan Lloyd and Elliott Durell having the best moments for the Silkmen.
In a first half of few chances Boreham Wood’s top scorer Bruno Andrade looked a threat for the visitors with the Silkmen’s Danny Whitehead often finding himself tracking back to provide cover for Jared Hodgkiss against the tricky forward operating on the left side of the Wood’s two-pronged attack.
The visitors preferred the ball in the air opposed to promotion-pushing Macclesfield’s more expansive style of play, and their physicality caused some problems for the more technical players on the field - Elliott Durrell and Scott Wilson. Macclesfield edged the first half with several last-ditch blocks from the Wood defenders preventing ‘keeper Grant Smith from being called into action.
Midfielder Danny Whitehead caught the eye in the 28th minute after letting fly with a shot from 25 yards, only to be well-saved by Smith.
Andrade came out for the second half in the same vain as the first, with his shot from the edge of the box fizzing just past the post in the 51st minute. Macclesfield continued to grow into the game however, and were very unlucky not to take the lead in the 57th minute, as Durrell crossed into the box to find the head of Ryan Lloyd whose effort was blocked by Wood defender Kane Smith.
Bruno Andrade was booked for simulation after going down just outside the box in the 73rd minute after a challenge from Keith Lowe, with referee Peter Wright deeming the Boreham Wood attacker to have gone down too easily.
The introduction of Gime Toure provided the Silkmen with a different point of attack but in the end Boreham Wood’s game plan to nullify Macclesfield Town’s attacking players was a success, and the away side left Moss Rose with a point to take them into tenth place, with Macclesfield retaining their place in the play-offs still just one point off of Dover at the top of the National League table after their draw with Leyton Orient.
