Despite being the new year it was the same old result for Macclesfield Town as they cruised to victory over FC Halifax Town at the MBI Shay Stadium on New Year’s Day.
A hat-trick from Mitch Hancox sent the Silkmen firmly on their way and Scott Wilson also got himself on the scoresheet as Macc romped to a 4-1 victory.
Before the game John Askey made five changes to the team. Sam Ramsbottom slotted into goal to replace the suspended Shwan Jalal and Noe Baba started a game for the first time since 16th September.
After the game Askey spoke to www.mtfc.co.uk with his thoughts on the game and said he felt he really saw the squad show their quality when it comes to depth.
“I was a bit nervous today making one or two changes, but I thought it was needed,” Askey said.
“With Halifax coming back from Dover in their last match I think the fresh legs paid off and if we didn’t know it before we know we’ve got a strong squad.”
Askey also singled out hat-trick hero Mitch Hancox for individual praise after the game and said it’s nice to see him get some reward.
“Mitch has got a habit of getting goals and that’s great because he’s terrific in training and at geeing everyone up and its nice to see him get some reward.
“It’s the same with Noe he’s never complained when being out of the squad, but he’s done really well today and overall I’m really pleased to start the new year off with a win and to get four goals as well is especially pleasing.
“For the first goal, it was a great ball by (Ryan) Lloyd and Mitch had made a good run forward, it was good football.
“The pitch here suited us when passing the ball about in the first half and we kept the ball well and made them work without making many chances but once we went one goal ahead there was only one team going to win it.”
