Pre-season has started at Macclesfield and new trialists are looking to impress manager John Askey in order to gain a place in his new look Silkmen squad.
Thirty players trained today ahead of the new season, including the players that have extended their stay at Moss Rose, and the trialists that are eager to show what they can do.
John Askey alluded to the fact that he wouldn't sign players just for the sake of signing players last week, a comment he backed up today.
Speaking to mtfc.co.uk John Askey said: “We've got a lot of trialists in, we had thirty players training today. It makes it difficult because instead of being able to organise your team and do things right you're looking more at who's coming in and who you could potentially sign. But like I said before we won't sign players if I don't think they're good enough.”
Earlier this week John Askey also made two new signings to his squad. Scott Burgess signed on loan from Bury and Josh Thompson signed after leaving his previous club Southport.
Both players have had football league experience, with Thompson formerly playing for the likes of Celtic and Burgess impressing in the Bury squad last year. The manager also spoke about his two new recruits.
“With Josh, it's just about getting him over his injuries, we know he's a decent player at this level so once he's injury free we’ll get him on the pitch, but we've just got to manage him until the start of the season.
“Scott’s come in and he's been nice and bright, he's a young lad who's trying to make his way in the game and he's hoping that he's come to us to play games, which is obviously better than playing U23 football. Hopefully his quality will come through and be a good signing for us this season.”
