With the new season approaching a new look Macclesfield squad is preparing to start the new 2017/18 National League season. The season starts with a difficult trip to the Racecourse Ground as the Silkmen face Wrexham.

However, with all the new players signed, John Askey now has a big decision to make regarding who will lead the Silkmen out onto the pitch as captain.

John Askey spoke to mtfc.co.uk about the captaincy: “I’ve decided who’ll be captain. I haven’t told the players yet but as I said before you want eleven captains out there on the pitch.

“I think in football it’s not as important as in cricket or rugby as usually when you play you’re too out of breath to be shouting and screaming at people but I know how it is.”

John also spoke about his transfer dealings this summer and said that he’s happy with the players he’s brought in but he would like to add some more to his current crop.

“I’m happy with the business we’ve done. There’s one or two positions I’d like to strengthen and hopefully we can do that but hopefully we won’t need to and everybody plays well and everybody stays injury free then it takes care of itself.

"Usually when you’re winning the team doesn’t change too much but we’ll see when the season starts.”
