Mitch Hancox admits that despite the prospect of promotion being real at Macclesfield Town, the whole squad are doing everything to ensure they don’t get distracted as the season begins to take shape.
The Birmingham City youth graduate made all the headlines in The Silkmen’s first game of 2018, as he netted a hat-trick in his sides comfortable 4-1 victory over Halifax on New Year’s Day.
Scott Wilson also found his name on the scoresheet during an afternoon that saw John Askey’s men open a six-point cushion at the top of the National League table.
Hancox now admits that, although the league position is promising, the squad will do their best to ensure they will not get carried away.
He said: “We’re starting to believe we can achieve something special, but the thing is slipping under the radar.
“No-one is going out and shouting about it, so I think it’s about taking each game as it comes and seeing where we end up at the end of the season.
“The situation is brilliant and in terms of what we want to achieve at the end, we’re doing really well. If we can keep it going then perfect.”
Despite having to wait for his chance, Hancox also told Silkmen TV that he is relishing the competition for places in the side this season.
“It’s obviously frustrating for me because I want to play, but the lads have been brilliant, and I’ve had to wait for my chance because of it.
“Everyone is pushing each other on and they all want that opportunity to play. If you’ve got that shirt, and you’re playing, you just want to keep it.
“We’re all going for the same thing and that’s a massive positive.”
