On Friday 9th February eight schools from the Cheshire East area came together to compete in the first round of the National League Under 11’s Boys cup at Tytherington High School.

The eight schools in attendance were Marlborough Primary, Lindow Primary, Prestbury CE Primary, Ivy Bank Primary, St Johns the Evangelist, Wilmslow Academy, Gawsworth Primary and Hollinhey Primary School.

After a tight group stage with a total of 21 goals scored over 12 matches we had our four semi finalists. In Group A it was Prestbury who came out on top winning all their games scoring six in the process. Runners up were Ivy Bank only losing to Prestbury in their games.

In Group B Gawsworth finished first on seven points scoring two goals and runners up were St Johns the Evangelist on six points. Both semi finals ended in 1-0 victories. Prestbury, defeating St John’s in a tight contest with chances for both teams.  In the other semi-final, Ivy Bank beat Gawsworth 1-0 in a close encounter.

We had our two finalists, Prestbury Primary School and Ivy Bank. The two teams had met in the group stages and it was Prestbury who won 1-0 so everyone expected it to be a close game. Ivy Bank took the early lead but Prestbury replied rapidly to draw level. Prestbury then scored two in quick succession which shocked Ivy Bank. Despite Ivy Bank pushing for a goal to get themselves back into the game they couldn’t quite do it and Prestbury held on to win the tournament and progress to the regionals.

One week later and Macclesfield Town Community Sports Trust again hosted the first round of the National League Under 11’s Girls Cup at Tytherington High School. Wilmslow Academy, Prestbury, St Johns the Evangelist, Gawsworth, Marlborough all competed to try and progress to the regional finals.

Every team played each other once and at the end the bottom team were knocked out of the cup. Marlborough were the unfortunate team to be knocked out only collecting one point after their four games. St John’s were the form team winning all four games with their most impressive victory coming against Prestbury with an 8-0 victory.

In the semi-finals Prestbury were drawn to play St John’s and Wilmslow Academy were drawn against Gawsworth. St John’s won 4-0 in their game to progress to the final and Wilmslow Academy progressed on penalties 2-1 after taking an amazing 14 penalties. In the final St John’s booked their place at the regional’s after a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory following a 1-1 score draw.

Tournament organiser and community coach Kyle Lord said: ‘’It was great to organise such a successful tournament and to see the great football being played by all teams. It was a great effort and we look forward to working with Prestbury and St John’s and enjoying the regional tournament.’’

Both Prestbury CE Primary and St John the Evangelist C of E (aided) Primary School will now represent Macclesfield Town in the Regional Finals where they will aim to reach the grand finals at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 12th May, where they will play before the National League play off final.
