Macclesfield boss John Askey says he believes he has a strong squad ahead of the opening 2017/18 National League fixture against Wrexham on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of the game, Askey discussed the great options he now has in his team, though stressed there is always room to strengthen if the opportunity is right.

He said: “There will be some disappointed lads who don’t make the squad, but as I’ve stressed to them all it’s early doors. We’ve got players now that no matter who goes in and who comes out, we’re strong.

“That’s what you want from your squad – they’re all very capable at this level. When you’re playing well, they should all be pushing for a place.

“I’m happy with the business we’ve done this summer but there’s still one or two places I’d like to strengthen, although hopefully we won’t need to if everybody is fit and playing well! When you’re winning the team doesn’t change too much, but we’ll see as the season goes.

“You can be lucky, start the season well and that sets you going, but you can also be unlucky and it takes a while to get off the ground. I believe in what we do in the Football Club and it’s stood us in good stead over the last five years, so hopefully we can keep that going.”
