Match Preview: Plymouth Argyle vs Macclesfield Town

7 March 2020

The Silkmen make the long journey south to Devon as we prepare to take on promotion chasing Plymouth Argyle in Sky Bet League Two action.

The Pilgrims come into the game looking to close the gap on league leaders Swindon Town, whilst the Silkmen will be eager to bounce back from two consecutive defeats.

Last Time Out

It has been less than three weeks since the reverse fixture at the Moss Rose, where Shilow Tracey’s maiden Silkmen goal was cancelled out by a late Antoni Sarcevic strike.

Recent Form

This afternoon’s match is Plymouth’s second home fixture this week after they played host to Grimsby Town on Tuesday evening.

Three first half goals were enough for the Pilgrims to record a comfortable home win with Tyreeq Bakinson, Ryan Hardie and Luke Jephcott all on target.

A home draw against Cambridge United and an away defeat at Bradford City round off the rest of Plymouth’s results since our last encounter.

The Pilgrims boast a strong home record this campaign, and are currently unbeaten in their last four at Home Park - a run stretching back to New Year's Day.

Ones to Watch

Academy graduate Luke Jephcott has continued to impress since breaking into the first team setup, scoring seven league goals in just thirteen outings – including the third goal on Tuesday evening.

Byron Moore has also stood out for the Pilgrims in recent weeks, scoring five goals and adding a further six assists since his move from Bury last summer.

Antoni Sarcevic proved his goalscoring prowess against the Silkmen by netting a late equaliser at Moss Rose - however he will miss this afternoon's match after being shown a red card against Bradford City last weekend.

Argyle captain Gary Sawyer will also miss the game through suspension, after the club decided against appealing his red card - which he also picked up against Bradford City.

View from The Dugouts

Silkmen Head Coach Mark Kennedy spoke of Plymouth's qualities, but insisted we would be well placed to deal with them, ahead of this afternoon’s fixture:

“It’s a long old journey but we will prepare properly, train in the ground, and leave from there,” he said.

“Plymouth have been one of the standout teams we have played, they have had a game midweek, so we have had more of a rest, although obviously they have not travelled.

“They are a team that are flying high in the league, I was super impressed with them here, so we know what we are up against – we know their strengths and weaknesses, so we are ready.”

Meanwhile, Plymouth manager Ryan Lowe praised his players following their convincing victory over Grimsby Town in midweek:

“We look back on it today, do some work today and tomorrow, and then look to put a plan in action for Macclesfield,” he said.

“A lot of credit has to go to the boys.

“We’ve got a good group, we do the work with them, tell them what we want, and they go out and apply it.”
