Saturday morning had us wake up to less than perfect conditions for a football match thanks to the stormy weather. Storm Dennis really was trying to spoil the fun.
Luckily the pitch managed to cope with the weather and it was confirmed that there was to be no inspection and the game was on!
I always knew this was going to be a hard game with how well Exeter were playing. I mean look at where they are in the league!
Despite this I was still really excited for the game. The team new was announced just as we were walking down to a blustery Moss Rose.
Macc got us underway and Jonathan Mitchell was defending The Star Lane End goal in the first half. There were opportunities for both teams in the first five minutes - with the home side looking the more dangerous.
Sadly the first goal came for Exeter in the 10th minute. Devastatingly they doubled that lead six minutes later.
This really seemed to wake the team up and start pressing - finally finding space down the right side for the first time.
In the 40th minute up popped Connor Kirby to score his first professional goal and in doing so, put us back in to the game.
Macclesfield were definitely searching for a equaliser at that point but went in to the half time break 2-1 down.
The teams took to the field for the second half with a change - Theo Archibald on in place of David Fitzpatrick.
In the 63rd minute Macclesfield found the equaliser we needed when Captain Kelleher jumped head and shoulders over everyone and headed the ball in to the back of the net.
It looked like we were going to gain a valuable point when a lapse in concentration lead to another goal. Heartbreakingly it was a third goal for Exeter and turned out to be the final one of the game.
The game finished 3 - 2 to the visitors and after a game I knew would be hard, I couldn't help feel disappointed that we didn’t get a point in the end!
We now look to Tuesday and what is sure to be another tough game against Plymouth.
Hope to see you there!
