Mark: "All We Can Do Is Continue To Work Hard"

17 February 2020

Exeter City’s Ryan Bowman scored a late winner to break Silkmen hearts at Moss Rose on Saturday afternoon.

The travelling side were 2-0 up after little over fifteen minutes thanks to first half goals from Nicky Ajose and Pierce Sweeney. Macclesfield managed to restore parity before ultimately suffering a defeat in the Sky Bet League Two fixture.

After the game, we caught up with Head Coach Mark Kennedy for his post-match thoughts -

“In terms of the effort the lads have played some great football under these conditions, some of the plans we looked into to hurt them worked really well. The effort and determination that we look to get out of the players was 10 out of 10. It was brilliant. Ultimately, we lost the game for one reason and we continue to lose games for one reason, and that’s the five seconds when we lose the lapse in concentration and it continues to hurt us.”

“All we can do is to continue workigg, practising and praising the players. All I can do as a coach is to keep on saying to the players what we need to do better and it is what I’ve done since I’ve become the coach here.”

“No team is coming here and beating us fair and square! We know whoever we play its going to be a really tough game but it’s the times when we switch off it’s what is costing us the game.”

Connor Kirby managed to get his first professional goal on the day, we asked Mark on his thoughts about Connor’s performance –

“I’m really happy for Connor, he makes magnificent runs into the box. It’s my job as a coach to get the players around you to get the ball in. I’m really pleased he got the goal today.”

Skipper Fiacre Kelleher also got himself on the score sheet for the Silkmen’s second goal in the match.

“We finally score from a set piece and I’m happy for Fiacre to get a goal. I have to thank Danny Butterfield for his work in training because he’s done a magnificent job as well.”

“They’re a great group to work with and they’re honest, humble and bloody good players! All I can do is give them information and we work really hard tactically, mentally and physically.”

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I very rarely make the same mistakes twice.”

“We’re the only team playing on Tuesday so nobody can close the gap on us! It’s a free hit and it should be a no regrets type of match for the players.”
