Opposition View: Exeter City (H)

14 February 2020

The Silkmen host promotion-chasing Exeter City tomorrow afternoon, as the visitors make the 224-mile journey to the Moss Rose.

The Grecians come into this match in relatively inconsistent form. Matt Taylor’s side fell to a 3-1 defeat against Port Vale at the end of January, before losing to league-leaders Swindon Town 2-1 at the beginning of the month.

Since then, the Devon side have seen an upturn in form - beating bottom-placed Stevenage 2-1 and thumping Oldham Athletic 5-1 on Tuesday night. Remarkably, that result saw five different goal scorers for Exeter. Richardson, Jay, Collins, Bowman and Dickenson all got on the scoresheet in a dominant display at St James Park.

Last season, Exeter finished in a respectable ninth place, just one point off the play offs. Matt Taylor’s side are having an even more impressive season this year, sitting in third with sixty points so far and only three points off top.

Opposition Manager Comments

Matt Taylor spoke about Exeter’s season so far and their upcoming fixtures.

He said: “We have a lot of tough away fixtures to come but we have nothing to fear. We will go to Macclesfield on the back of two wins and then a semi-final to look forward to, and there are lots of opportunities to come.

“We have got 60 points already. We got 70 points last season and got 14 games to come so I know we are in terms of the number of points we want to get.”

Ones To Watch

Ryan Bowman is among the top scorers in the league this season with 12 to his name. The powerful striker was signed from Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership side Motherwell in January 2019.

Randell Williams is another dangerman that Macc have to be wary of. The winger has five goals and 11 assists to his name this season. He started his career at Tottenham Hotspur before spells at Crystal Palace and Watford until he joined Exeter City on a free.
