Tim Flowers Unveiled As First Team Manager

28 August 2020

Macclesfield Town are delighted to confirm the appointment of former Premier League winner and England goalkeeper Tim Flowers as our new First Team Manager.

The 53-year-old will be assisted by Gary Whild and Danny Whitaker and has agreed an initial deal until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

After starting his professional career at Wolverhampton Wanderers back in 1984, Flowers went on to become one of the most respected goalkeepers of his generation.

A move to Southampton followed, where he made just under two-hundred appearances for The Saints between 1986 and 1993.

It was at this point that Flowers made the move north to join Blackburn Rovers for a £2.4m fee, which made him the most expensive goalkeeper in Britain.

Rovers were to finish second during his inaugural season at Ewood Park, but were to go one better twelve months later - as they historically lifted the Premier League trophy after conceding just thirty-nine goals all season.

Tim was to go on to enjoy spells at Leicester City (where he lifted the 2000 League Cup), Stockport County, Coventry City and Manchester City, before transitioning into the coaching world after making five-hundred senior playing appearances.

Most recently, Flowers was manager at Solihull Moors where he boasted an impressive record within the National League.

Over 102 games, Flowers achieved forty-nine victories and twenty-eight draws as he took The Moors to a memorable second-placed finish back in 2019.

In addition to this, Tim has also been Assistant Manager at Queens Park Rangers, Hull City and Kidderminster Harriers.

In addition to our very own "Magic Man" Danny Whitaker, Tim will also be assisted by the vastly-experienced Gary Whild.

Gary has a proven reputation for spotting and nurturing young talent and was a key influence in Solihull's impressive 2018/19 campaign under the former England 'keeper.

Formerly at Kidderminster Harriers under Steve Burr, Gary's knowledge and expertise at this level of the game is second to none and as such, he represents a valued addition to our new management team.

We will be hearing from Tim shortly to gain his initial thoughts on arriving at the Moss Rose and wish all three members of our management team every success for the season ahead!
