Recently, we asked all our loyal fans to get in touch with us and let us know what their favourite memories involving The Silkmen are. In the next instalment in a series of recollections, Andrew Gate takes us back to an unforgettable trip to Eastleigh back in 2018.
I’ve been very lucky to experience some fantastic games during my time at Macclesfield Town.
After joining the Club in 2017 as Media Assistant, I have now moved into my current roles as Ticketing Manager / iFollow commentator
Even though I have only been at the Club for a relatively short time, I’ve already experienced a title-winning campaign and last-day survival.
It probably comes as no surprise therefore that my favourite memory has to be on that fateful day on the South Coast when we took on Eastleigh during the 2017/18 season.
If I’m completely honest, I’m the most pessimistic football fan you’ll ever meet. However, after the 4-1 win at Tranmere even I knew we’d do it!
It was just a case of when and not if.
I was in the Press Box for the game, so I was sat directly opposite the Silkmen faithful who travelled in their numbers for what had to be one of the longest trips of the season.
Weirdly, I had no nerves on the day. I just knew we’d do it.
When Tyrone Marsh slammed in the first goal I did have a sudden realisation of “wow, this is really happening”.
I will never forget the roar the fans made when that went in and the unbridled joy I saw in the away end - pure ecstasy!
Mitch Hancox’s sublime finish just put the icing on the cake and at that point nothing was stopping us!
In the media team, we had everything planned for the celebrations and when the full-time whistle blew, the job of telling the world we’d done the impossible was one I took so much joy in! “Silkmen fans, drink it in” I think I tweeted.
After the celebrations on the pitch had ended, being in that dressing room was special! You see those scenes every season on the TV but you never expect to be a part of it!
I vividly remember sitting in the stands in Eastleigh’s empty stadium with a beer and just taking everything in. Macc were champions!
Nothing could have gone better that day and I’m so grateful I had the chance to experience it with great people.
People will always talk about Leicester’s miracle but ours was even greater!
