On This Day: Port Vale 0 v 1 Macclesfield Town

27 April 2020

Despite monsoon-like weather conditions, the Silkmen faithful travelled to Burslem in their numbers for our final away match of the 2018/19 season one year ago today.

Port Vale were our opponents and with this, we renewed our acquaintances with the legendary John Askey.

There was to be no time for sentiment however, as we faced a revived Vale side looking to secure our EFL status.

Whilst reliant on other results to confirm our membership of the elite 92 at the end of the game, Sol Campbell's men knew that victory would see us take us a massive step towards safety regardless.

The game was a tense affair and undoubtedly affected by the inclement weather. Yet it proved to be a memorable one, as David Fitzpatrick scored his first goal of the season to hand the visitors a crucial one-nil victory.

This meant that Macc would go into the final game of the season effectively needing a solitary point to complete a remarkable escape and as such, elicited a great deal of confidence that the job would finally be done.
