Our run in the EFL Football Manager Cup ended in first round defeat, with Daniel Fry's virtual Silkmen side on the end of a heavy loss at the virtual New Lawn this evening.
Aaron Connolly netted a hattrick, whilst Jevani Brown and Liam Shepherd were also on target as Rovers ran riot.
Jevani Brown opened the scoring inside the opening ten minutes, putting the ball into an empty net after a cut back from the left wing.
Jak McCourt tried his luck from distance five minutes later, but his effort was well saved by Smith in the FGR goal as we pushed for a leveller.
Shilow Tracey hit the post after half an hour as we continued to press, after Nathan Cameron had come close from a corner kick.
Forest Green had chances of their own to double their advantage, but Jonathan Mitchell was in inspired form for the Silkmen.
Donovan Wilson broke through just before the hour mark and a leveller looked to be on the cards, but his effort lacked the power needed to trouble FGR goalkeeper Smith.
Arthur Gnahoua came close moments later with a header from the centre of the area, but he couldn’t keep his effort down as the chance went begging.
This proved costly as Aaron Collins kept his cool to poke the ball into the top corner after Williams’ cross from the left, leaving Mitchell little chance as FGR pulled away.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Rovers made sure of the result, with Aaron Collins putting the ball past Mitchell from close in.
Liam Shepherd made it four as he hammered a volley into the bottom left, with the Silkmen desperately short at the back after committing men forward.
Aaron Collins would snatch his hattrick late on as FGR rounded off a comprehensive victory at the virtual New Lawn.
