Match Report: Macclesfield 1 v 1 Colchester United

28 September 2019

It was a game of two halves for Macc at the Moss Rose today as they struggled to build on a dominant first half display against Colchester United.

Paddy Osadebe’s skilful strike was cancelled out by Theo Robinson in the first half before a frustrating second period forced the Silkmen to settle for a point.

Macc begun the game strongly and had a couple of half chances in the opening period. With three minutes on the clock, O’Keeffe’s cross had Dean Gerken scrambling across his line, but the ball clipped the crossbar and was cleared to the goalkeepers relief.

Arthur Gnahoua then came close with a left footed drive after he latched onto a loose Cohen Brammall pass, but his effort failed to trouble the ‘keeper as he shot wide.

Macc’s deserved break through came in the eleventh minute, courtesy of a piece of stunning skill from Paddy Osadebe. Theo Archibald did well to find the midfielder in the box, and with Colchester men surrounding him, the midfielder calmly tiptoed around the U’s to slot coolly into the bottom left corner.

The Silkmen pushed for a second goal as they looked to further capitalise on their dominance, as Gomis and Kirby both had efforts that rose over the bar from outside the box.

One of the stand-out first half performances came from Gnahoua who frequently showed confidence to take his man on, and he threatened again in the 37th minute. Archibald whipped a cross onto his head and he did well to generate enough power to force Gerken into a reflex save.

Macc defended strongly against the U’s and limited them to little goalscoring opportunity and another Silkmen chance came due to their defensive efforts. After a corner was cleared, Archibald put the afterburners on and he raced with the ball at his feet from one box to the other, he ghosted past Cowan-Hall but his shot was saved expertly by Gerken from inside the penalty area.

However, despite controlling for large periods of the half Macc conceded an equaliser just before the break through Theo Robinson. Tom Eastman drilled a ball across the face of goal and the striker prodded home to bring the game level.

Macc failed to build on their first half performance after the break and it’s fair to say that their second half display was rather uninspiring.

With rain hammering the Moss Rose turf, Colchester created the only real chance of the half in the 51st minute when Evans got down well to deal with Robinson’s strike from outside the area.

The Silkmen struggled to keep possession and thus created no chances, however head coach Daryl McMahon will be pleased how his side limited the visitors to very few goalscoring chances. The head coach made changes to try and tilt the game in his favour, but neither team could gain a foothold and it seemed a draw was inevitable.

However, Macc thought they’d won it in added time when Kelleher bundled the ball over the line when leaping for the ball with Gerken, but he was adjudged to have fouled the ‘keeper in the process.

The Silkmen will be hoping for a better performance in their next game away at Cambridge United after todays fixture ended all square at the Moss Rose.
