Match Preview: Macclesfield Town vs Newcastle United U21

3 September 2019

The Silkmen will kick-off their 2019/20 Trophy campaign this evening as we welcome Newcastle United under-21s to the Moss Rose.

Macc come into the game on the back of a hard-fought draw against Stevenage on Saturday, and we will be looking to go one better against the side that eliminated us on penalties in this competition at St. James’ Park last season.

We hope to see as many of you as possible come and support the team in what looks set to be an enthralling encounter under the Moss Rose lights.

As for our opposition, whilst they play an under-21 side in this competition their youth and reserve system is usually made up of under-18s and under-23s sides respectively.

Their EFL Cup run came to an end in round three last campaign, as they fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat away to rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in January.

For a more recent insight as to what we can expect from our visitors this evening, Newcastle United under-23s have had a tough start to their Premier League 2 campaign; losing their opening three matches before defeating Fulham’s PL2 side 2-1 on Friday.

Players from Newcastle’s under-18s side are also likely to feature this evening, and they have got off to a steady start in the U18 Premier League; earning four points from their opening four fixtures.

Newcastle under-23s captain Owen Bailey, who is likely to skipper the under-21 side this evening, had this to say ahead of the match:

“The Trophy is something we really look forward to every year so everyone's very excited. It's massive for all of the lads to show what they've got in front of all the EFL clubs.

"It's a big opportunity for the club as well to prove what we are like against the likes of Macclesfield and other Football League sides and seeing where you are at as a player.”
