Daryl: "Decision Making Cost Us"

23 September 2019

The Silkmen were condemned to defeat against Grimsby Town on Saturday, as Ethan Robson’s strike in the 56th minute proved to be the difference at Blundell Park.

Macc had chances to level the tie but Head Coach Daryl McMahon was left to rue those missed opportunities after the full time whistle.

“Poor decision making cost us today. Shooting too early when you’re one on one, dragging a shot when you’ve got space to step into – we’ve done that quite a lot.”

“It’s frustrating because we’ve lost today but, are they a better team than us? I don’t think so. They’ve probably got players with better nous. I’ve been around the block with players that take their time in the final third, but we don’t at the moment.”

“Virgil [Gomis] has great chance to equalise and it just has to be a goal if I’m being honest. He’s worked really hard today and on Tuesday night as well but I think in those moments we’ve got to be more clinical. However it's not just Virgil, its happened in three or four games before today aswell.”

However, at the other end of the pitch, the Head Coach commended his sides defensive efforts to nullify a potent Mariners frontline.

“We weren’t good enough in the final third today and I think that’s the biggest thing.”

“We were good defensively for most parts because we’ve limited them to little whilst dealing with the threat of [Matthew] Green, [James] Hanson and [Ahkeem] Rose very well in the first half.”

“I’ve got to be honest with what I see from the lads every day and what I see in games. We go through patches where we play with so much quality, but we need to do it more consistently.”

“I don’t want us to meander along like a mid table team, I think we’ve got a chance to really develop across the season but the players have to want it too.”
