Last Saturday, it was nearly a 300 mile round trip to The Energy Check County Ground in Wiltshire - the home of Swindon Town.
I clearly remember this fixture last season with mixed emotions. I was full of pride and excitement as it was our first encounter back in the EFL but absolutely heartbroken at the result.
Looking at the league stats there was no doubt in my mind that it was going to be a very tough game to collect points from.
We all arrived at ground on a warm, sunny afternoon and the team news was announced just as we walked through the turnstiles.
The boys were all warming up as I took my seat and my nerves really settle in until kick-off came - Swindon got us underway and then the nerves disappeared for me anyway.
I was still a little disappointed to see how the first half went despite knowing it would be a hard game. Swindon definitely had the more possession and opportunities. They scored their first in the 37 minute. However a good bit of play from Macc saw us looking to respond moments later but unfortunately it didn’t really trouble the Swindon 'keeper.
Following on from this the hosts doubled their lead just before the half-time whistle. Disappointingly this saw our boys frustration and passion boil over.
Macc make changes at half-time but despite a early opportunity in the opening minute of the second half it continued much like the first. Swindon then went 3 - 0 up following excellent build up play with lots of flowing passes.
The long journey back to Macc gave us plenty of time to reflect.
Although I remain disappointed, to be fair Swindon are the best team we’ve played against so far this season in my opinion and they may well be in contention come the end of the season - although there remains a long way to go!
We move on to Tuesday with the visit of The Exiles of Newport to the Moss, who I’m sure will be another strong team.
See you there!
