Daryl McMahon revealed his elation to SilkmenTV as his heavily shuffled Macc side picked up their first win in the Leasing.com Trophy over Newcastle United U21.
The Head Coach recognised the good football that was on display from his side which featured a handful of debutants and returning players.
“I’m delighted because we’ve made a lot of changes to give players some minutes, but we’ve won by playing some very good football.”
“As players they’ll all want a fair crack to show what they can do, I thought the ones who played today were really good despite not playing much lately.”
“There was a bit of stiffness in the last ten or fifteen minutes but overall, I thought it was a great performance.”
The game provided the players an opportunity to impress McMahon, and that chance was taken with both hands by striker Virgil Gomis.
“It was good football in the build-up and I’m glad for Virgil. Again, he’s not played a lot of football recently but I thought he worked hard tonight.”
“It wasn’t really going well for him in the first hour or so as he didn’t have many chances, but he kept going and in the end, he got his reward. It was a tidy strike as well to be fair to him.”
“He had a couple of good chances to finish Newcastle off after that and Ben Stephens also come close from a cross.”
“We had plenty of chances to put the game to bed tonight, but we decided to keep it a slender one goal lead until the end!”
The youthful visitors were not to be taken for granted, but the Head Coach praised his side's defensive showing towards the end of the game.
“Newcastle had a bit of the ball towards the end, but it wasn’t anything that needed us to dig deep and really defend.”
“I thought the shape was good and we managed to limit their chances, there wasn’t many times they got in behind us.”
“The one time they did was right at the end when the ball flashed across the face of goal, but for me its good defending from the lads in the box to clear it.”
