Daryl: "We Played Well And It Was Disappointing To Lose"

4 November 2019

Macclesfield Town suffered a slender 2 - 1 defeat in our Sky Bet League Two away fixture at Carlisle United last Saturday - despite opening the scoring with a Theo Archibald strike in the 25th minute.

After a hard-fought game, The Silkmen were unlucky to claim nothing from the game and we caught up with Daryl McMahon shortly after the full-time whistle -

“I’m very proud of the performance of the players, I thought they were terrific from the first minute. We deservedly went ahead with a great goal from Theo Archibald, we hit the cross bar unfortunately, but we played some really great football.”

We asked Daryl about his team’s efforts to fight back in the game, he said: “You can’t fault them, we put them under pressure in the second half and we were unfortunate to concede from a corner. We played well and it's disappointing with the result, but the performance was very good.”

“After a few injuries we made some changes to the team and I believe we started the game well. Ben Stephens did really well, and it was a good performance we played some really good football.”

Theo Archibald put the Silkmen ahead in the first half after a fantastic strike, we asked Daryl about the goal, he said: “It was a fantastic strike and we had numerous chances to double our lead which for me I believe we deserved.”

We then went onto ask Daryl on Joe Ironside’s unlucky penalty miss: “This happens in football and I know that Joe is disappointed that he missed but even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo miss penalties. He has to pick himself up and we’ll be there to support him.

“Our group of players really believe in what we’re aiming to be doing, they stuck to the style of play and moved the ball fast and that was present all afternoon.

“We didn’t want to hold on for a draw during the game we really wanted to go out there and win the match and that’s what I said to them at half-time.

Daryl had high praise for Macclesfield captain Fiacre Kelleher, he said: “He’s been outstanding this season, a great captain and an outstanding leader. He’s overall just an outstanding human being and he was unfortunate today to make a mistake which happens in the game.”
