Oldham Athletic made their second competitive appearance at the Moss Rose back in mid-January and as was the case during their first visit back in 1999, were put to the sword by a Silkmen side who were defiantly battling to retain their league status.
The match was sparked into life with less than a minute on the clock, as Callum Long's shot was adjudged to have been handled in the area and Urko Vera despatched the subsequent penalty.
This unquestionably galvanised Sol Campbell's side, who sought to restore parity in the quickest time possible.
That ultimately came in first half injury time, when Harry Smith seized on a loose ball twenty yards out and unleashed a fizzing drive across the face of goal which nestled into the far corner of the net.
Despite the half-time interval interrupting a fruitful period for the hosts, the momentum which was built up towards the end of the first half was replicated at the start of the second.
So much so that nine minutes after the restart Scott Wilson gave Macc the lead.
Our leading marksman latched on to a long ball which wasn't dealt with by the Oldham defence and he took full advantage of this by confidently lifting the ball over the advancing Dan Iverson.
Both sides had guilt-edged opportunities to increase the scoring, yet Macc would go on to claim another vital three points with the visitors having Mohamed Mapuche dismissed in added time.
