He came through Sunderland’s academy but didn’t make an appearance for the first team, before being released by Swindon at the end of last season.
Smith said: "It's a great feeling, something which I wanted to be a part of - a great club which is on the rise.”
Sheffield United Winger Re-Signs For Carlisle United
Carlisle have re-signed Nathan Thomas on a season-long loan deal after his deal with Gillingham was cancelled.
Earlier this month, the 24-year-old signed for the League One club on loan, but he struggled to settle there and returns to the Blues, where he scored four goals in sixteen appearances last campaign.
Manager Steven Pressley told the club website. "He was one of my main targets. We're delighted we've got it over the line. He's a really exciting player."
