Macclesfield Town defender Miles Welch-Hayes completed his first ninety minute haul of the season on Saturday, as we faced Championship side Wigan Athletic in a behind closed doors encounter.
Despite losing out to a 20th minute Anthony Pilkington strike, there were many positives to take from the outing and this was something which Miles was keen to focus on -
"It was good - the main thing was to get minutes and fitness in. All the boys put in a good shift today.
"It wasn't a bad result either - we had a few chances as well. We could have got a few goals today, but I think that everyone was pretty solid.
"It's all about getting to know each other and linking up.
"The more games we play together, the better we will become."
The Latics certainly put a strong side out against Sol Campbell's men and playing against such illustrious opponents is something which can only benefit our lads at this stage of the season -
"Obviously if we come up against better opposition then when we come back to our league then it will hep us a lot.
"These guys will be a lot sharper and more physical than the teams in our league - so it's always good to play against a top team."
With the match played out at Wigan's training ground, we asked Miles whether it proved to be difficult without the Silkmen faithful roaring the team on -
"It is more difficult because you haven't got the crowd there pushing you on for ninety minutes.
"But it is still pre-season - the aim is just to get minutes and focus on the game."
With the squad now embarking on the third week of pre-season training, we asked Miles whether or not there are already some tangible improvements in terms of fitness levels -
"Every week we are getting fitter and fitter, so we just need to take this into the games.
"We need as many games as we can and to work hard in training in order to make sure that we are prepared for the first game of the season."
