Danny's Magical Career: A Statistical View

11 July 2019

Danny wrote himself into the history of the Silkmen on his senior debut on 2 February 2002 - joining the elite group of players who have scored on their debut for the club.

His 82nd minute goal in the home match against Exeter City, came just 25 minutes after his introduction from the substitutes’ bench and was Macclesfield’s 250th Football League goal.

Standing fourth in the Macclesfield All-Time Player Appearances with 457 appearances, only John Askey (679), John Collins (578) and Graham Tobin (471) have made more appearances in all competitions for the club.

As an attacking midfielder he ranks a creditable 16th in the All-Time Goalscorers with a total of 75 goals and is only the seventh player to feature in both the list of Top 25 All-Time Appearances and the Top 25 All-time Goalscorers.

Danny has made 228 appearances in the English Football League for Macclesfield, second only to Darren Tinson who made 297. By coincidence he is also stands second - jointly with Jon Parkin, for the number of goals scored in the Football League for Macclesfield with 36 strikes. Matthew Tipton holds top spot with 59 goals.

In addition, Danny spent seven years away from the Moss Rose playing for Port Vale, Oldham Athletic and Chesterfield where he made a total of 305 appearances in all competitions scoring 52 goals which takes his professional career statistics to a total of a not inconsiderable 762 appearances and 127 goals in all competitions.

It should also be remembered that he made in the region of 20 appearances for the youth team and almost 40 appearances for the Reserves at Macclesfield.

Some of the milestones in his career have been:

11 September 2002 First appearance in the English League Cup in the first round against Barnsley at the Moss Rose, where he won the match with a sparkling hat-trick (his only one for the club) in the space of 14 minutes in the second half of extra time taking the final score to 4-1.

A few more highlights of Danny’s career;

He has scored the winning goal on nine occasions, including two occasions when the sole goal of the match came from the penalty spot. In drawn matches he has scored the equaliser on 11 occasions, with three of these goals coming in the last minute or in time added. There have been four occasions where he has scored a brace in a single match, each time ensuring that Macclesfield were the winning side.

There have been just two red cards, both in his early days and not a single caution during seasons 2006-07, 2011-12 and 2017-18 - demonstrating his skill and all-round ability.

There was a third red card in the match against Altrincham on 13 December 2014 in the first round of the FA Trophy which was rescinded on appeal.

In the 2016-17 season Danny featured in more matches for the Silkmen than any other player when he made a total of 55 appearances.

He was joint top-scorer along with Matthew Tipton in the 2002-03 season, notching up 14 goals and was second top-scorer to Chris Holroyd with 11 goals in the 2016-17 season.

Voted the Supporters’ Player of the Year for the 2017-18 season, Danny was also Player of the Year for the Non League Paper and was named in the Vanarama National Team of the Year.

Danny’s statistical record is of such significant that it will be many years before it is matched, if ever.
