The Silkmen squad reported back for pre-season testing last Friday and despite the fact that the summer break was heartily enjoyed after the heroics of last season, there is no doubt that everyone is now setting their sights on building on that success during the upcoming campaign.
This view was exemplified by midfielder Ben Stephens when we caught up with him -
"Yeah I have had a good summer, but I am glad to be back and ready to work hard so that we can start strong.
"Obviously that [EFL survival] helped massively, as we could all go and enjoy the summer instead of coming back in the league below.
"We are all ready and raring to go now!"
At this point of the season, it is common for managers, players and fans to look ahead to the next nine months as they set out their early parameters for what would represent a successful season and Ben is no different as he spoke about his aims -
"We need to set our aims right from day one and need to push for as high as we can.
"All the lads here, together with the new signings are gelling well and we definitely have high hopes for next season."
Pre-season training, certainly in it's early stages is something which professionals all over the country go into with a degree of trepidation. Yet for Ben, it is an absolute necessity when we asked him about how the first day back played out -
"Well we have been measured in terms of body fat, height and weight. We then did a few jumps and sprints before the bleep test.
"We have worked really hard today!
"We have had a good summer and a long time off so we need this in terms of getting us as fit as we can be."
Finally, we all know the importance of team spirit and how this can have a major impact in how the season progresses. With that in mind, Ben is already professing that this will serve us well during the gruelling season ahead -
"The new lads have gelled really well. They are all good characters and I think that we all have to stick together - just like we did at the end of last season and kick on from there."
