Match review: Macclesfield Town v Colchester United

16 February 2019

Saturday has finally arrived! This means Macclesfield Town’s Sky Bet League Two clash with Colchester United is mere hours away.

After an electric Cheshire Derby seven days ago, which saw a 97th minute equaliser from Reece Cole, fans and players alike will be buzzing to return to Moss Rose.

A win for the Silkmen today could see them leapfrog both Morecambe and Yeovil Town and out of the danger zone.

Here’s what Sol Campbell said ahead of the game -

The U’s are fifth in the table but are in a tight battle to keep their play-off place with teams close on their tail, though two wins on the bounce has kept them in the driving seat for now.

However, preceding these games, John McGreal’s side lost to Crewe Alexandra and Mansfield Town in back-to-back matchdays – evidence that Colchester’s recent struggle for consistency has continued.

Macc were on the end of an unfortunate 1-0 loss last time these sides met at the JobServe Community Stadium, but the atmosphere at Moss Rose could give the Silkmen the upper hand this weekend.

Here’s what the Colchester manager, McGreal, told the U’s club website ahead of today’s fixture…

"We played them in December, when Sol was taking charge for the first time, and despite our win, you could see that he was already getting something different from their players.

"Since then, they’ve picked up points to get them nearer to the teams above them and showed great resilience in getting a draw against Crewe after being behind three times.

"We know it will be tough, but we'll be looking for the three points just like we do in every other game."

Colchester have never won at Moss Rose, losing 2 - 0 in their last visit almost 20 years ago. Make sure you play your part to ensure this record continues!
