Match Preview: Walsall vs Macclesfield Town

14 December 2019

The Silkmen travel to the West Midlands this afternoon, to face a Walsall side who have lost just one of their last eight matches.

Despite sitting 17th in the league, Darrell Clarke’s side have maintained a respectable run of form in three different competitions – the EFL Trophy, FA Cup and Sky Bet League Two.

Since losing to Swindon Town in early November, The Saddlers have come away with seven points from three matches.

They bounced back from that defeat with a 2-1 victory over Cambridge United, a goalless draw against Stevenage and an impressive 1-0 victory away at play-off chasing Port Vale.

Walsall also secured an impressive victory, beating Chelsea U21s 3-2 in the Second Round of the EFL Trophy at the beginning of the month.

Last time out:

The two sides last faced each other on 28th August 2018 in the Carabao Cup Second Round. The Silkmen came out victors on penalties after an enthralling 3-3 draw which saw Danny Whitaker score a last-minute equaliser.

Macc were able to secure the victory with a 3-1 win on penalties after Walsall were denied by the heroics of Kieran O’Hara in goal.

Ones to watch:

Caolan Lavery is the Saddlers top scorer with five goals. The former Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United striker has bagged in four different competitions for the hosts this season. However, he has only scored one in the league.

Stuart Sinclair is another player the Silkmen need to look out for. The combative midfielder helped Bristol Rovers rise from the Vanarama National to Sky Bet League One, making 142 appearances in that time.

He joined Walsall this summer after helping guide Bristol Rovers to 17th in League One.
