Played For Both: Stevenage

29 August 2019

A regular rival during both clubs’ days in non-league, we’ve only ever shared eleven players with Saturday’s opponents Stevenage -

Carl Alford

After a few false starts in the professional game, Carl dropped down to non-league in the early 1990’s and moved to Macc in 1993 for a fee of £1,700.

With twenty-six goals, Carl was top scorer for the Silkmen in the 1993-94 season before leaving the club the following summer.

Joining Stevenage on a free in 1998, Carl averaged more than a goal a game for The Boro, finishing on fourty-two goals in just thirty-nine appearances - earning himself a £50k move to Doncaster in 2000.

Chris Holroyd

Chris spent three months on loan at Broadhall Way in 2010, scoring in half of his twelve appearances.

After spending the next few years at various North West clubs, Chris joined his home town club of Macclesfield Town in 2013 after a successful loan period.

A hard working striker, Chris had to compete for a place initially but was a bench regular, scoring some important goals along the way.

After a spell at Wrexham, Chris is currently with Chorley in the Vanarama National League.

Guy Madjo

A talented player who never seemed to settle, Madjo played just one game for then newly-promoted Stevenage in the 2011-12, going out on loan for six weeks to Port Vale.

Guy joined The Silkmen in March 2013, filling in for the injured Matthew Barnes-Homer and scoring twice in eight appearances (including a stunning thirty yarder against Cambridge United).

Madjo was released at the end of the 2012-13 and went abroad, spending time playing in Hong Kong and Thailand, before joining Tranmere in November 2014.

Sam Wedgbury

Sam signed a one year contract with Macc in July 2010, making his debut against Stevenage in the game at Broadhall Way that season.

A brief loan period at Altrincham followed before Sam managed to secure a regular spot at the Moss, making over one hundred appearances for the club and being voted both Fans and Players’ Player of the year in his final season.

Sam signed for League One Stevenage in May 2013, making thirteen appearances over the next twelve months.

He is currently plying his trade at Chesterfield in the National League.

Peter Winn

An extremely likeable player, Winn joined Stevenage in 2010 after sending a letter to the club asking for a trial.

He made his debut for The Boro in the same game at Sam Wedgbury and scored his first Stevenage goal in the 3-1 win over Newcastle United in the FA Cup in 2011.

After a month without a club following the end of his contract at Stevenage, Winn signed for The Silkmen on a free transfer and quickly became a fan favourite–going on to make seventy-six appearances.

In February 2013, Winn found himself in goal against Luton Town as Rhys Taylor was sent off after half an hour with Macc 1-0 down.

He kept a clean sheet too - with the game eventually finishing in a draw.
