Following a meeting last night between representatives of the Football Club, Silkmen Supporters Trust, Butch's Bar's former management and Richard Butcher's family, it was decided that given the deterioration of the bar over recent weeks the only viable option available to us would be to close it with immediate effect.
This was clearly a very difficult decision to take, but it was one that we had to make in view of the fact that the recent spout of inclement weather had further put strain on the structure itself.
Health and safety has to take paramount importance and we were all agreed that closing the bar was the right course of action to take.
We know that this is going to inconvenience all those who enjoy a pre-match and half-time drink within Butch's Bar and would like to apologies for this.
Further to this, we also spoke about how we could effectively provide supporters with the ability to enjoy a drink on the London Road side of the ground in both the short and long term.
A number of ideas were formulated, including the creation of a Fan Zone which is popular at many club's throughout the country.
Everyone present was committed to working together in order to provide a safe and friendly area for fans to socialise in during a matchday - as well as creating a facility which remembers our eternal number 21 in the manner that it should do.
Media Manager Bob Trafford stated - "Butch's Bar has needed some major work for some time - I think that everyone who has been in the bar over the last few years knows that deep down.
"The recent torrential downpours and the further damage that they have caused has meant that Butch's has sadly deteriorated to an extent where action now has to be taken.
"Although this will come with a great deal of sadness to us all, we now have an opportunity to create a structure which remembers Richard in the way he should be.
"I will be working together with the SST and Richard's family to make sure that this project is successful.
"In the meantime, we are investigating ways which we can provide all those in London Road with the facility to purchase a drink both before the game and at half-time in the quickest timescale possible.
"Finally, I would like to reassure fans that we will be working very closely with the SST and Richard's family in order to achieve what we all believe will be another much-loved tribute to our number 21."
Andy Worth, Chairman of the Silkmen Supporters Trust added -
"Butch's Bar has been hanging on to dear life for quite some time now and even with a great amount of work done to it, we cannot be sure that this would not be in vain.
"As a result, the club had no alternative than to close the bar and seek to find other ways to provide an area where fans can meet up for a pint in the London Road part of the ground - as well of course, to remember our beloved number 21 in a manner which is respectful to his memory.
"The SST will be in constant communication with the club regarding this and will offer all the help that we can do in making sure that the new facility is one which provides everyone with a far more welcoming persona than the old structure sadly can now do."
Richard's mother Gail followed this up by stating -
"Macclesfield Town will always be a special place to me for obvious reasons and I took a great amount of pride in Butch's Bar for so many years.
"It is sad that it has deteriorated to the extent that closure is now the only option, but I am also excited about the new plans that are being developed to create a new area for fans to socialise in Richard's name.
"The fans at Macclesfield Town have been brilliant to us as a family and they deserve a really special place to enjoy a drink at the game and I will be only too happy to lend my support to this in any way I can."
A further update will be issued once plans have been finalised and any existing bookings will be offered alternative placements within the stadium.
