Match Preview: Macclesfield Town v Lincoln City

14 September 2018

High-flying Lincoln City visit the Moss Rose for our next Sky Bet League Two fixture this afternoon, as Mark Yates' side look to gain their first victory of the season.

The Imps are sitting pretty at the top of the league table, however Newport County are breathing down their necks and Danny Cowley’s side will be desperate to put some breathing space between themselves and second place by this evening.

The two teams haven’t met since Lincoln sealed the National League title at Sincil Bank back in 2017 and the game provides the perfect opportunity for the home side to bounce back from last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat away at Stevenage.

So, here’s everything you need to know ahead of our clash with Lincoln City.

Team News

Mark Yates will have goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara available for selection, as the Manchester United loanee returns from International duty with the Republic of Ireland.

However, long term absentees Jordan Ponticelli, Ryan Lloyd, Ben Stephens and Elliott Durrell are all out of the game as they continue to return from injury.

On the other hand, Imps boss Danny Cowley will be without captain Lee Frecklington after he was sent off in Lincoln’s 1-0 defeat Crawley last Saturday. However, other than that, he has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Last time out – Lincoln 2 Macclesfield 1 / April 2017

Lincoln sealed the National League title in the last fixture between the two sides ending their stay in the National League.

However, it was the Silkmen who took a shock lead in the game. Mitch Hancox picked up the ball from outside the penalty area and curled a powerful shot into the back of the net, subsequently stunning the home crowd to silence.

Terry Hawkridge then went on to write himself into Lincoln folklore as he scored twice to seal the lid on the Imps’ promotion campaign.

One to Watch – Jason Shackell

When Jason Shackell joined Lincoln, it was one of the signings of the transfer window with the central defender bringing a wealth of experience, quality and leadership to Sincil Bank.

A product of Norwich City’s youth academy Shackell went on to represent the Canaries in the Premier League. He also had spells with Wolves, Doncaster, Barnsley and Derby before Burnley signed him for a reported £1million.

He captained the Claret’s side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2013/14 becoming a cult hero in the process after he scored against fierce rivals Blackburn Rovers and was a mainstay in Burnley’s Premier League campaign.

He moved back to Derby after Burnley were relegated but he couldn’t help the Rams make the final step to the Premier League as the club just missed out in the play-offs. has made the permanent switch to Lincoln this summer.
