Danny Whitaker spoke to Silkmen TV after last nights defeat at home to Northampton and apologised to the fans, as well as insisting the team will use the defeat as motivation going into next Saturday’s clash with Cambridge United.
“I’m speechless to be honest, I didn’t see it coming whatsoever; after last week’s training and Saturday’s game I was expecting a lot better and I told the lads that it was not good enough.
“It was bordering embarrassing really, I apologise to the fans because they deserve better than that and I really thought that we were going to give them another performance tonight, but it didn’t happen.
“Our closing down, our passing was poor, everything was the complete opposite of Saturday.”
Danny admitted the performance came as a shock to him after recent games; and was totally out of character for a team that had worked so hard to beat Carlisle on Saturday.
“There was space all over, we were second best all over the pitch, everywhere, which was strange for us because we have been the complete opposite against Tranmere, all week in training, and on Saturday [against Carlisle].
“So, it was completely out of character really and out of the blue for whatever reason, I don’t know. We’re scratching our heads, so, it’s one of them.
“You’re always tempted [to make changes] when subs come on and have an impact, but we decided against it and decided to go with the same eleven.
“We thought that would be enough to cause Northampton problems, but it obviously wasn’t the case.”
Danny also said that due to the manner of the defeat the players should not need to be lifted by the coaching staff, and the team should use the game as motivation ahead of next Saturday’s crucial clash against Cambridge.
“There should be a reaction anyway, we shouldn’t have to say anything.
“I think once they have watched it back which we will do on Thursday and show them what they shouldn’t have done they shouldn’t need any lifting or any motivation whatsoever.
“They should be embarrassed tonight which I would be, and I am embarrassed as well, so no it shouldn’t take any talking to, they should be bang up for it, whoever plays.
“We didn’t deserve anything, so we have got to pick ourselves up on Thursday and we have got a massive game on Saturday.”
