Match Preview: Newport County v Macclesfield Town

2 October 2018

Macclesfield Town will look to follow up their positive performance on Saturday as they face Sky Bet League Two high-flyers Newport County AFC in South Wales tonight.

County are currently second in the table and have won their last three games on the bounce in all competitions - netting eight goals in the process.

On Saturday, they came back from 2-0 down to defeat Cambridge United 4-2 - exemplifying their title credentials

Tonight, County will search for their eighth three-point haul this campaign to ensure they stay within touching distance of table toppers Lincoln City.

Yet, despite Newport’s league position, The Exiles have a goal difference of minus one, along with the division’s worst defensive record above Morecambe in 17th.

A third of their fifteen goals conceded in the division have come on Newport’s own turf, proving that this strong, spirited side can be undone.

Team news

Magic Man Danny Whitaker will have to wait to see if he recovers from a knee injury sustained on Saturday, whilst  Callum Evans will miss out after being stretchered off at Morecambe.

Long-term absentees Elliott Durrell, Jordan Ponticelli and Ryan Lloyd remain side-lined, whilst Michael Rose will miss this fixture and complete his suspension.

Jamille Matt could win a place in Newport County’s starting eleven, having netted four times in their last two matches in all competitions.

Last time out: Newport County AFC 4-1 Macclesfield Town

The Silkmen have only ever visited Rodney Parade once before, their sole trip coming in 2013 to contest a National League fixture. However, it was not one to remember.

Despite Jay Burgess opening the scoring for the visitors in the third minute, The Exiles went on to win 4-1 with goals from Christian Jolley, Andy Sandell and a brace from Robbie Willmott.

This win played a part in County’s promotion to the Sky Bet League Two a few weeks later, a feat achieved in just one season. And almost five and a half years later, Macc will meet a new County side who are once again at the top end of their division.

One to watch – Padraig Amond

Newport have boasted ten different scorers this season and in his second term at Rodney Parade, starting number-nine Padraig Amond has once again played a pivotal role.

The 30-year-old Irishman is the joint leader in both goals and assists this campaign, having found the net on four occasions and set up his teammates on three.

The 5’11 striker, who has also plied his trade in the Republic of Ireland and Portugal, is a proven threat at League Two level, having scored a combined forty-five goals in ninety league appearances for Grimsby Town and Hartlepool United.

He left the latter club in the summer 2017 to remain in the fourth tier with Newport, where in his first season at Rodney Parade, he finished as County’s top scorer with 15 goals. This season he has shown no signs of slowing down.
