Match Preview: Macclesfield Town v Notts County

6 October 2018

Macclesfield Town will be looking to claim their first victory since their return to the EFL, as the Silkmen welcome Notts County to The Moss Rose on this afternoon.

After last week’s 1-1 stalemate against Forest Green Rovers and the mid-week heartbreak where Macc had to settle for a point at Newport County, Mark Yates' side will be desperate to secure their first League Two victory in over six years.

The visitor’s meanwhile have seen a recent change of fortune as the in-form Magpies have earnt back-to-back victories in the league and are unbeaten in their last four.

Manager Harry Kewell will be hoping to make it a third on the spin in Cheshire this afternoon, with the Nottinghamshire club hoping to continue on their quest to climb the League Two table.

Team News

Long-term absentees Elliott Durrell, Jordan Ponticelli and Ryan Lloyd all remain side-lined, whilst Michael Rose could be set to feature after serving his full three match ban following his sending off at Morecambe.

Magic Man Danny Whitaker also is sidelined, after he picked up a knee injury last week.

The visitors have no major injury concerns with Richard Duffy and Ben Hall still the only two senior players missing, however Kewell will be likely to name an unchanged side following their two successive victories.

Last time out – Notts County 1-0 Macclesfield Town

You have to rewind over eight years to find the last time these two clubs went head-to-head.

Jamie Clapham claimed the only goal of the game to secure all three points for The Magpies whilst at the over end Premier League winning keeper Kasper Schmeichel was in between the sticks at the Meadow Lane earning a clean sheet for his side.

However, the game was sadly overshadowed by the devastating news that saw former Macclesfield manager Keith Alexander tragically passed away following his return home from the game.

Head-to-head Record

The Silkmen have met Notts County on 16 occasions, with 14 of those encounters being played in League Two.

Macclesfield wins - 4

Games drawn - 8

Notts County wins – 4

One-to-watch: Jon Stead

The former Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers striker has enjoyed a fine career in the professional game and will prove a real menace when he enters the Moss Rose for the first time in his playing career.

With other 614 competitive appearances and over three seasons playing in the Premier League, Stead is a true footballing veteran and even at 35, he doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon.

The former England U21 international has made a blistering start to the campaign firing 5 times for The Magpies - his latest coming in their midweek 3-1 victory against Crawley Town.

The Silkmen will have to be at their absolute best to keep the 6ft 3 forward quiet and Yates will be hoping his back-four are up to the task if they are to claim their first clean sheet of the season.
