Match Preview: Macclesfield Town vs Newport County

17 September 2019

Macclesfield Town return to the Moss Rose this evening to face Newport County in the Sky Bet League Two as we contest the inaugural ‘Unsponsored Derby’.

After Saturday’s disappointing result away at Swindon Town, we will be looking for a response this evening against The Exiles.

Daryl looked ahead to this evenings match on Saturday and was eager to look to tonight as an opportunity to bounce back in front of our fans.

"For us as a club we need to know where we stand.

"I think that with the dramatic end to last season combined with our promising start this campaign, people can get a little bit carried away with their expectations.

“There is going to be ups and downs, but we have to get through them. We will react positively, there is no doubt about it.

“We can’t dwell on it; we have to see what we can improve, and we move on to Newport.”

We hope to see many of you at a slightly different looking Moss Rose this evening to cheer the team on to a positive result against Newport.

As for our visitors, they come into the match on the back of a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Northampton Town.

This, however, is their only league defeat in what has been a strong start to the season for The Exiles, seeing them occupy fourth place in the Sky Bet League Two standings.

This is what opposition goalkeeper Tom King had to say ahead of the match:

“They’re a good team and they’ll be looking for a reaction after they got beat at the weekend as well.

“We’re ready for a fast start and we know we might have to weather a bit of a storm before looking to impose ourselves on the game and hopefully coming back with three points.”

Match Report: Macclesfield Town 1 v 1 Newport County

17 September 2019

Daryl McMahon’s Silkmen secure a 1-1 draw against Newport County in the Paddy Power Unsponsored Derby.

With the ‘Unsponsored Trophy’ up for grabs The Silkmen went 1-0 down early doors of the game as Padraig Amond scored from close range after a Newport corner. An early blow but Macc were fired up to gain an equaliser.

They didn’t have to wait long as in the 18thminute the Silkmen were pressed high in The Exiles half, Jay Harris scooped a lovely ball over the back four to find Paddy Osadebe who poked the ball over the keeper to bring Macclesfield level.

After a slow start to the game, McMahons men grew with confidence with Arthur Gnahoua being the liveliest with his constant attacking presence.

Later in the first half the skipper Fiacre Kelleher was within inches of putting the Silkmen ahead after Connor Kirby’s freekick was whipped in delightfully to find him all alone in the box. However, he saw his effort fly over the bar.

Michael Flynn’s Newport came into the game sitting in 4thposition after noticeable victories against Crewe, Port Vale and Forest Green Rovers.

Macclesfield were looking to bounce back after a bitter loss on the weekend to Swindon Town, as the game finished 3-0 in the home sides favour.

Early in the second half, Macclesfield conducted an electrifying counterattack, Osadebe managed to whip in a brilliant ball which found Connor Kirby at the back post. However, he just couldn’t get over the ball enough and saw his effort go wide.

Macclesfield played some of their best football this season in the second half and came close to going ahead with Osadebe’s effort from outside the box in the 65thminute, but the keeper managed to push it aside for a corner.

The last few minutes saw the home fans on their feet as Macclesfield kept on applying the pressure to grab a late goal, it wasn’t enough and The Silkmen grabbed a respectful point.

We now turn out attentions to this Saturdays Sky Bet League Two fixture in which we take on Grimsby Town away from home at 3:00pm. The Silkmen will surely be anxious to get revenge after the loss in the Carabao Cup a few weeks back.

Starting Line-up: Owen Evans, Fiacre Kelleher (C) Theo Vassell, Arthur Gnahoua, Jay Harris, Theo Archibald, Miles Welch-Hayes, Connor Kirby, Corey O’Keeffe, Virgil Gomis, Emmanuel Osadebe

Subs: Reice Charles-Cook, Joe Ironside, Ben Stephens, Fraser Horsfall, Brice Ntambwe, Nathan Cameron
