Macclesfield Town make the long journey up to Cleethorpes this evening, as we contest our rescheduled Carabao Cup Second Round tie against Grimsby Town.
We go into the match on the back of Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Crawley Town, a result which saw us extend our unbeaten run to four matches in all competitions.
With the prospect of a visit to Stamford Bridge to face Premier League outfit Chelsea on offer to the victors of this evening’s tie, everyone at the club is eager to see our unbeaten run extend to five matches - and with it book our place in the next round of the competition.
There is no doubt that tonight's game will provide us with a tough test, however The Silkmen have won the last five encounters at Blundell Park and have not been defeated there since 2005.
Victory this evening would see Macc progress to the Third Round of the competition for just the second time in our history - the first being last season when we defeated Walsall at the Bescot Stadium.
Speaking ahead of the game, Head Coach Daryl McMahon had this to say:
Grimsby come into the match on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Crewe Alexandra, leaving the Mariners in seventh place in the table, ahead of the Silkmen on goal-difference.
Our hosts are yet to avoid defeat in their two matches so far this month, falling to defeat against Scunthorpe United in the Leasing.com trophy before Saturday’s defeat to Crewe.
Opposition manager Michael Jolley had this to say ahead of the game:
“It’s important that everybody just focuses on the game. Macclesfield are on the same amount of points as us in the league.
“They’ve lost two games all season so you can see they’re a hard team to beat, and they’ll be fired up for the game just as we are.
“And they’ll be trying to get themselves to Stamford Bridge, so it’s really important that we just focus on the game and trying to beat Macclesfield.”
Carabao Cup rules state that should the scores be level at the end of ninety minutes then a penalty shoot-out competition will determine the winner - without an intervening extra-time period.
