Match Preview: Macclesfield Town vs Exeter City

15 February 2020

The Silkmen are back at the Moss Rose this afternoon as we welcome high-flying Exeter City in Sky Bet League Two action.

The Grecians can go joint top with a victory this afternoon; but Mark Kennedy and his side will be eager to bounce back from Tuesday’s disappointment.

Last Time Out

Harry Smith's late goal saw us come back from behind to take all three points in dramatic fashion in this fixture last season.

Exeter surrendered the lead on two occasions before Smith's winner in a pivitol match which saw us escape the relegation places.

The reverse fixture this season came on the opening day, as a late Nicky Law strike deflected off Ryan Bowman and past Owen Evans to condemn the Silkmen to a late defeat.

Recent Form

Exeter have demonstrated their promotion credentials in recent weeks, winning two of their three games this month, scoring eight goals in the process.

Their last defeat came away at league leaders Swindon Town at the start of the month, with Hallam Hope’s goal in first half stoppage time proving to be the difference between the sides.

Despite their good form, away games have proved difficult for the Grecians of late, with their last two ending in defeat – the other being a 3-1 reverse at Vale Park.

Ones to Watch

Ryan Bowman has found the net on ten occasions in the league so far and stopping him will go a long way towards keeping Exeter at bay this afternoon.

Randell Williams has been the Grecians chief creative threat this campaign, with the former Crystal Palace and Watford youngster providing ten assists as well as contributing four goals since his move from the latter last summer.

Nicky Law has arguably been their most important player this season, with the former Rangers midfielder providing seven goals and seven assists in his 26 league outings so far this season; although he is an injury doubt for this afternoon as he recovers from a possible concussion sustained last weekend.

Welcome to Moss Rose!

This afternoon’s match could see recent signings Shilow Tracey, Donovan Wilson and Ben Tollitt make their home debuts.

We hope you will join us in welcoming them to the Moss Rose this afternoon!

View from The Dugouts

Mark Kennedy spoke about the need to bounce back from Tuesday's disappiontment as he checked in with Silkmen TV to preview this afternoon’s game; you can watch his full pre-match interview below:

Meanwhile, opposition manager Matt Taylor had this to say ahead of the game:

“Location wise we know we’ve always got a long way to travel.

"We’ve got two good wins behind us, hopefully our fans can travel, they’ve got to be careful because of the weather and hopefully that doesn’t affect the traffic that much.

“It will be a difficult game; they’ve had a lot of tight results and there’s a few players that we’ve got to be aware of. But we’ve got to go there and back ourselves.”

Match Reports

Match Report: Macclesfield Town 2 - 3 Exeter City

15 February 2020

Ryan Bowman scored a late winner to break Silkmen hearts at Moss Rose this afternoon.

City were 2-0 up after little over fifteen minutes thanks to first half goals from Nicky Ajose and Pierce Sweeney.

Connor Kirby pulled one back for Macc before the break and the comeback looked to be complete when captain Fiacre Kelleher headed home with half an hour of the match to go.

The Silkmen started the game well with Danny Whitehead’s shot being saved by Lewis Ward after just two minutes, and Fraser Horsfall almost scoring from the resulting corner.

In the 10th minute, Kelleher headed just wide as the Silkmen piled on the pressure in the awful windy and rainy conditions.

Just sixty seconds later though, Ajose finished off a lovely team move to put Exeter ahead against the run of play.

Two minutes later, the visitors got away with one when Aaron Martin brought Joe Ironside down when he closed in on goal but was only booked.

The Grecians doubled their lead in the 17th minute, when Sweeney met an Ajose cross with a stunning half-volley that flew into the net.

Bowman should have made it three just moments afterwards, but his shot was straight at Jonathan Mitchell.

For the next quarter of an hour, Exeter dominated the encounter with Matt Jay squandering a couple of chances as the Silkmen looked nervous.

Then, five minutes before half-time, Macclesfield were handed a lifeline when a free-kick hit an Exeter defender and bounced into the net off Kirby.

On the stroke of half time, Shilow Tracey, who replaced Donovan Wilson earlier in the half, flashed a shot just wide of goal Macc went into the break trailing 2-1.

Chances were at a premium in the second half due to the weather worsening but Mark Kennedy’s side kept probing.

Their hard work was rewarded in the 63rd minute when Kelleher rose highest to meet a corner and his bullet header drew the home team level.

With twenty minutes remaining, Jacob Blyth replaced Joe Ironside for the Silkmen and almost made an immediate impact but he blazed his shot wide from a promising position.

It was not to be, however, and Ryan Bowman's late deflected effort bobbled over the line to break Silkmen hearts.
